Embracing Trends in Interior Design Without Losing Your Style

When it comes to trends in interior design, it’s easy to get swept up in the latest must-have décor items that quickly become outdated. Rather than chasing every fleeting fad, it’s smarter to design a home that reflects your personal style and stands the test of time. After all, you’re not just curating an Instagram feed - you’re creating a space where you live, relax, and truly feel at home.

Why Following Every Trend May Not Work for You

Now, don't get me wrong, trends can be fun. A pop of this year's "it" colour can be a nice little pick-me-up. But basing your entire home design on what's hot right now? That's a recipe for design regret. In our projects, we’ve discovered that a well-curated space is defined by thoughtful personal touches rather than every fleeting trend.

For example, one project featured a traditional unjal integrated into a modern living area. By pairing the time-honoured swing with sleek, contemporary seating, the space maintained a warm nod to heritage while embracing modern comfort.

Trust Your Instincts and Define Your Style

The key to a lasting design is to trust your gut. Ask yourself:

  • Which design styles naturally resonate with you?

  • Do you appreciate the warmth of traditional Indian décor?

  • Are you drawn to the simplicity of minimalist spaces?

  • Or do you lean towards the eclectic charm of bohemian design?

In one of our projects, we curated a space around a collection of artefacts and artworks amassed over years of travel. Each item had its own story, and together they created a rich tapestry that defined the character of the home.

Your unique taste should guide your decisions, not the dictates of current trends in interior design. Embrace what feels right for you and don’t worry about conforming to the latest magazine spreads.

And here's a little secret: you don't even need a "theme" at all! I know, gasp! As an interior designer, I actually think themes can be a bit… limiting. Think about it – the moment you commit to a strict theme, you're boxing yourself in. What if your tastes evolve? What if you find a piece you love that doesn't quite fit the "theme"?

Instead of a rigid theme, focus on creating a cohesive feel. Think of it like putting together an outfit. You wouldn't wear head-to-toe neon just because it's "in," right? You'd mix and match pieces that complement each other and reflect your personal style. Your home should be the same way.

Personalisation: Making Your Space Truly Yours

Personal touches create homes that tell your story. We’ve found that designing with personalisation in mind yields spaces that feel both current and enduring. Consider these examples from our work:

A Classic Entrance with a Modern Twist
An inviting entrance for a dancer’s home featured a classic statement piece paired with elegant details. This balance set the tone for the rest of the home by combining timeless style with modern sensibilities.

For a client passionate about board games and travel, we designed a corner where chess pieces—sourced during an international trip—were artfully arranged. This display not only highlighted the client’s interests but also added an unexpected layer of charm to the room.
Bright Accents in a Muted Palette

In one living room redesign, a neutral base was enlivened with vibrant cushions and custom artwork. This subtle yet impactful infusion of colour transformed the space, offering versatility and warmth.

Showcasing Individual Interests
In another project, a cyclist’s passion was celebrated in the foyer by proudly displaying a stylish bike as a statement piece. It was a bold declaration that your home reflects who you are—your space, your rules.

Even spaces with a purpose, like a maid’s room, can be integrated with a touch of intrigue. In one project, a hidden door in the foyer not only fulfilled a functional need but also added character and a bit of mystery to the entryway.

So, how do you actually do this? Here are a few tips:

Practical Tips for Creating a Timeless Home

Here are a few strategies to help you integrate timeless design with subtle nods to the latest trends in interior design:

  • Know Thyself: Spend time exploring various design styles by browsing magazines, Pinterest, and blogs. Identify the spaces that make you go “Wow!” and let that inspiration guide your choices.

  • Invest in the Essentials: Choose high-quality, timeless pieces such as classic furniture, durable flooring, and neutral wall colours. These foundational elements ensure your home remains stylish even as trends evolve.

  • Accent with Personality: Use accessories like artwork, throw pillows, rugs, and curtains to introduce trendy hues. These items are easy to swap out when your taste changes or when a new trend emerges.

  • Mix and Match: Don’t be afraid to blend different styles and textures. When done thoughtfully, mixing various elements can create a unique, harmonious space that reflects both your personality and the current trends in interior design.

The Magic of Major and Minor Colours

This is one of my favourite tricks for creating a space that's both timeless and adaptable. It's all about balance and flexibility.

One effective strategy is to use the concept of major and minor colours in your design.

  • Major Colours: Select a neutral, versatile shade for large areas such as walls and major furniture pieces. Colours like soft greys, warm beiges, or muted greens create a flexible foundation that pairs well with various accent colours.

  • Minor Colours: Add personality with accessories using brighter or trendier colours. These minor accents, think cushions, rugs, or decorative art can be updated with ease as new trends in interior design emerge, giving you the freedom to experiment without a complete overhaul.

Your home should be a reflection of your unique taste rather than a mirror of every fleeting trend. By blending timeless design elements with subtle trendy accents, you can create a space that’s both current and enduring. So, ditch the pressure to keep up, embrace your personal style, and create a space you'll truly love for years to come!
